Castle Hayne, NC is located in New Hanover County, North Carolina. The total population as of 2007 was 1,321. Castle Hayne is known for having mild winters and hot, humid summers, and this comfortable weather provides ample opportunities for outdoor activities in this area.
Castle Hayne was named after a plantation of the same name that existed in the 18th Century. This area was popular in the 19th century for its communities of European immigrants whom made a living through intensive farming of the land. Most of these immigrants were from Holland, and they have brought a variety of cultural influences into the area.
Castle Hayne is home to a variety of historical attractions and monuments, making it a great travel destination for history enthusiasts. One such attraction is an early drawbridge, and it is one of the few drawbridges ever created in the American colonies. The drawbridge was built in the 1760s by Benjamin Heron and was erected again in the 1940s after being destroyed by British troops in the 18th century. Memorials for Civil War prisoner exchanges and James Innes are also located in Castle Hayne.
